I browsed through Kirsty Partridge‘s channel today and found this video (about a year old, length 11:39) which was very motivating and kept me nodding along.




In case you prefer reading to viewing, here are the 5 things in short:

1. There is nothing wrong with using reference photos.
2. Even really experienced artists make mistakes sometimes.
3. You don‘t need expensive art supplies to make good art.
4. There are lot os different ways to make a living as an artist.
5. You don‘t need to draw in a sketchbook to be a real artist.

All very true.

I would say, if you want to learn how to draw representational things -- people, animals, landscapes -- then it is infinitely easier to start with a static photo than a live model. There are things you can't learn from a photo, but it will be a lot easier to learn those after you have figured out the basics.

Thanks for the video and the summary - that was super helpful in deciding whether I wanted to watch it.

I'd extend #1: If something helps you make better art, or make art full stop, use it. Tracing? Digital brushes? Rulers? 3D references? Stabilised pens? Digital colour picking? Whatever it is, if it makes you happier about your art, use it. Snobs talk about cheating. Artists use whatever they can.

6. The real difference between 'doing art' and 'not being a real artist' is is a blank page. There are people who'll insist that you have to use certain techniques, mediums, styles or you're 'not a real artist' but actual artists come across a huge spectrum and if they have skills and confidence, WILL make it work. Even abstract art, weird shapes, colours, or other changes. You're only not-an-artist if you don't make art. I wasted far too much time trying to learn to do pencil drawings when we're just a lousy match and I had to spend time not-sketching before finally learning how to sketch (thank you, Vincent van Gogh!).

The first of his sketches I came across was the Langlois Bridge at Arles and it blew my mind. It uses precise lines for the mechanical bits, gestures for people/animals and trees and weird marks for everything else, and he's using such an expressive variety - dots, straight lines, curves, different directions and line weights, and it's such a masterful combination of precision and suggestion.

And I just fell in love with it. I copied a fair part of this image just to get a feel for how and where he made his marks, studied several other sketches, and started to sketch trees in this style before moving on to full scenes. It's very much about gestures and capturing the essence of features. (I have an example here) I'm still experimenting with the brushes I use - ideally I'll get one that gives me a bit more variety – but that was the first time I looked at a very complex image and actually had an idea of how to sketch it.
